A Goodbye Letter To My Cat Who Crosses The Rainbow Bridge

I recently heard about many cat parents who are having healing issues after their feline friend has crossed The Rainbow Bridge. I went through the same phase too, but after some time I found a way out and was able to heal myself and move on, but never forget.

Losing a member of your furry family is hard. Imagine losing someone that used to spend days with you, playing or just cuddling, waiting for you at the door, and all of a sudden, they’re gone…

I can’t even describe to you how much it hurts, but I’m sure many of us have experienced the same thing. Luckily, there are several ways to start healing, and if you ask me, they work, you just have to be patient. However, one of these ways is my favorite.

When my beautiful furry boy Mass passed away at the age of 15, I was heartbroken. Life without him was hard. At that time, I tried many things to help me heal and move on, but nothing helped. One day, I took a piece of paper and a pen and started writing a letter to Mass.

Believe it or not, it worked. It was as though I emptied my soul in those few pages and it helped me feel better. It helped me realize that Mass is in a better place now and I have to accept that.

The memory of him will live forever, of course, but I just had to let him rest peacefully. Now, I’ll share with you my goodbye letter hoping that it can help many other cat parents deal with their loss and heal.

Goodbye Mass, My Beautiful Furry Boy!

Dear, beloved Mass!

I’ll always remember the moment when I saw you for the first time… You were the only kitten in the litter and I immediately knew that you were special and that the two of us will become best friends.

When I took you in you were a small fur ball following me everywhere around the house and even out. We would play and cuddle all the time.

But, I quickly realized that you’re one of those cats who like to be alone sometimes, and I respected that, because we were always there for each other when we needed to.

I still remember, when you started hanging out with my dog Dex, oh it was so funny.

At first, both of you hesitated and I always needed to keep my eye on you, but luckily, you two became really good friends.

You even started copying his behavior. Whenever I would come home, you and Dex would wait in front of the doors, behaving very similarly. It was funny and sweet at the same time.

Step by step you grew into a big handsome boy, and I must admit I was very worried when you started looking for girls. I’m sorry for each time I didn’t let you out. I hope you understand that I was just afraid of losing you. But hey, looks like that moment arrives sooner or later.

And yes.. I was aware of that. So, I tried to spend as much time with you as possible and to provide you with a lot of love and attention so I can give you the life you deserve. I hope I did.

Remember the time, when I was in a rush and you hid under the stairs. Oh.. I was so frustrated that day, and I couldn’t find you anywhere, while you were literally spying on me from that spot.

Now, when I look back, I really miss that. I miss our playtimes and your hilarious tricks. But, most of all I miss our cuddle times and you sleeping between my legs or on my stomach. The purring massage was brilliant, but kneading on me, well, not so much.

Oh Mass, we had such a wonderful time, but you had to leave me all alone. That stupid cancer had to take you away from me and that wasn’t fair. Now I understand that it had to be that way.

You deserve to rest. I hope that now you’re enjoying the beautiful sunny meadow and hills where you’re hanging out with other furry friends.

It’s very hard to describe all 15 years with you. So, I just want to thank you for making me a better person. After you crossed the Rainbow Bridge I decided to help more cats, and adopt as many of them as I can.

Now I have a furry family of 7 cats, and they’re gorgeous and make me happy every day. But hey, don’t be jealous, you know you have a special place in my heart and that the memory of you will live forever!

Lots of purrs,

Final Words

I can’t describe how much writing a simple letter has helped me heal and move on with my life. I’ll never forget Mass; we had a great time and he helped me become the person I am today. I’m thankful for that.

So, if your beloved cat has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, try writing it a letter. Tell it what’s on your mind and say a proper goodbye, and most importantly, do your best to be a better person.

Adopt another cat and provide it with a beautiful and loving home. Worry not, your former kitty won’t be mad at you; on contrary, you’ll make it proud.

And I would like to conclude this by saying: When the cat you love the most becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.
